Year 9

Rock n Roll

The creation of new musical genres. An explanation of how musical styles are recycled over time with features of one style being cross-fertilised to create a new genre. Examples include the influence of music by composers such as Debussy and Ravel on jazz and blues, and how much rock 'n' roll music is based on the 12 bar blues which has its roots in blues music.

Here a guitarist demonstrates some of the basic rhythm guitar patterns which underpinned the early musical development of the rock and roll style. Ronnie Stewart outlines how the music of Elvis Presley was essentially a development of the blues where the driving rhythms of electric guitar riffs and patterns were given more prominence. This is exemplified in the music of the Rolling Stones, for example.
