Eliza Carthy talks about her experience of being a folk musician and composer. Eliza explains how the music she writes and plays consists of a bass line, a chordal layer, vocal melody and high vocal harmonies. She explains the only difference between traditional and contemporary folk is the instruments used. For example, Eliza often uses the drum kit in the music she creates and performs.

To make their music interesting minimalist composers put a very slight change in the pattern when it has been repeated about 10 times. Now, the new pattern is repeated about 10 times after which another change is put in etc. Eventually you end up with something which sounds completely different to the first musical pattern you started out with.

Listen to this piece of minimalist music from Steve Reich. Notice how the piece ends up starting from something very simple to something more complex when all the different patterns are added.

Task: to make up your own minimalistic piece of music.

1. make up a pattern of notes using just 2 or 3 notes.

2. repeat the pattern 10 times.

3. put a small change in (a new rhythm, an extra note etc.)

4. when you have done this 3 or 4 times, think of an ending.
Music@Sundornehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10633124000951706041noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2665641385983646721.post-53931238585488594972011-10-04T08:33:00.000-07:002011-10-04T08:33:41.298-07:00How to create a Latin Pop SongThe clip shows producer Sergio George in the studio demonstrating how to create a Latin pop song. Starting with a basic melody, he adds elements of Reggae, Spanish pop ballad, South American horn lines and Afro-Cuban percussion. The intention is to produce a track that is accessible and has immediate appeal – something that will grab the attention of radio listeners in the opening few bars. The 5 black notes on the keyboard form the PENTATONIC SCALE.

1. Play the pentatonic scale with your partner.
2. Using the top part of the keyboard, make up a short tune using the pentatonic scale.
3. Add a bass part using 2 or 3 notes of the pentatonic scale.
4. Change the tune and the bass part to make the piece a little more interesting. Perhaps play a tune in the bass. Change the rhythm, change the voice.

Keep experimenting until you have something you are pleased with.Music@Sundornehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10633124000951706041noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2665641385983646721.post-79838503645783770632011-05-26T04:12:00.000-07:002012-05-25T01:39:55.429-07:00National Youth Orchestra

Who can join?

if you are aged under 21, at school in Shropshire, and are of a suitable standard to join one of the County or Area groups then ask your instrumental teacher, vocal or the school music department about which group might be best for you.

What does being a member involve?

you will be performing specially chosen music with other players of a similar standard.

you will rehearse regularly, at times and dates which depend on the group you are in. The County instrumental groups, for example, rehearse fortnightly during term time, in Shrewsbury. Some of the smaller County groups, and the Area Groups, rehearse weekly.

you will take part in at least three concerts a year, in venues in various parts of the County. Senior players may be asked to join with Music Service staff in the Shropshire Sinfonia, one of Shropshire's top orchestras.

Does it cost anything?

There is a termly subscription currently £38.00 (County) £22.00 (Area).

How do I apply?

Head to the music department for an Audition Application Form.

Send your application form to the address at the top of the form.

You will then be invited to come for an audition during the Summer Term.
